Agency life for a decade. So burnt out.

Reflections on a Decade in Agency Leadership: Navigating Burnout and the Desire for Change

After a decade of steering SEO and AI strategies within the marketing agency landscape, I find myself at a critical crossroads. The experience has been enriching and challenging in equal measure, yet recent days have brought a profound sense of exhaustion and disillusionment.

Over the years, I’ve built strong relationships with clients, delivering consistent performance and strategic value. However, the recent loss of a valued client—sparked by undercutting from a less experienced agency and subsequently having to rectify a poorly constructed website—has been particularly hard to accept. It underscores the fragility of client trust and the volatility that can characterize agency work.

A significant contributor to my current burnout is the persistent struggle with internal team dynamics. Despite efforts to foster growth and innovation, there’s a pervasive resistance to pushing boundaries or embracing change. This stagnation, combined with the endless cycle of meetings—each addressing issues that could often be solved with proactive thinking—has taken a toll on my enthusiasm.

While I genuinely value the talented individuals I work alongside, the environment of agency life—marked by constant firefighting, client management challenges, and internal hurdles—has become increasingly difficult to sustain. The idea of venturing out on my own has been a recurring thought, driven by the hope of finding a more fulfilling, autonomous path.

Is independence the answer? Or is the grass truly greener on the other side? As I reflect on the past decade, I recognize the need for change, though the uncertainty remains. This post serves as a heartfelt acknowledgment of the exhaustion, coupled with curiosity for what lies ahead.

Note: If you’re experiencing similar feelings of burnout, know you’re not alone. Often, the path forward involves honest reflection, seeking support, and exploring new opportunities that align with your values and aspirations.
